Our son had been through so much already, but we decided to go in for a consult. We wheeled our son into his first appointment with Dr. Turnpaugh and never looked back.  His neurological expertise was evident as he spent all the time we needed to educate us on the brain and what happens to the body after a traumatic brain injury.  He also shared the importance of nutrition and the fact that it is key to recovery. It has been 2.5 years since he has been seeing Dr. Turnpaugh and our son is now walking and has regained functionality on his entire left side.  He has worked hard doing many types of therapies, but we truly believe the supplements and Dr. Turnpaugh’s knowledge and guidance have fueled his success. He is now taking college classes again and will continue to see Dr. Turnpaugh.  We cannot thank Dr. Turnpaugh, Heather and the entire team enough for their expertise, professionalism, and guidance along this journey.  Our son is still on the road to recovery, but with Dr. Turnpaugh’s help, we know the finish line is not far away.

Our son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Sensory Processing Disorder shortly after his second birthday. Before his diagnosis, he was already in the early intervention system (we were not surprised of the diagnosis but at the same time, we felt it when it was given.) Since the time he was an infant, he had a strong reaction when he was given dairy, leading me to completely eliminate it from his diet. And due to my personal history and going to Dr. Turnpaugh, I thought that gluten should most likely be eliminated from his diet as well (although he did have gluten a few times prior to his diagnosis.) On the whole, our son was a mystery to us and to his therapists. His vestibular/sensory system was hard to regulate and therefore it was hard for him to learn because he was constantly stimming to try to get the input he needed. Once he was diagnosed, I made an appointment with Dr. Shannon Smith for our son. To be honest, I wasn’t sure how much improvement I would see because he was already on a gluten/dairy free diet (and in my mind, that was what was going to help him the most.) I am so glad we made that appointment. We have discovered that our son has a strong intolerance to eggs (a food that he ate all the time.) After reading through his bloodwork, there were many numbers that were off and Dr. Shannon put him on supplements to get his system healthy and not constantly fighting itself. A few weeks after eliminating eggs and starting supplements, our son was a completely different child. He was able to regulate himself better (his stimming cut down tremendously), he had more focus, and his ability to socialize dramatically increased. He started really looking his therapists in the eyes, listening to and following tasks from them. It actually had all of us in tears one day because he just seemed like a changed child, it was amazing. It has almost been a year now since his diagnosis and we are so thankful for the progress that our child continues to make. Each time we go in to see Dr. Shannon, his levels are moving the direction we want them to be and the recommendations that he is making are working. Our son is going to be going to preschool next week, the same preschool that our “typical” kids attended. If someone would have told me a year ago that our son would be where he is today, I would not have believed it. We are so thankful for Dr. Shannon and Turnpaugh Health and Wellness Center!!!

I was a 62 yr. old female diagnosed with insulin dependent Type 1 diabetes, on an insulin pump, and battling rollercoaster blood sugars amor many years. At the time of starting with Turnpaugh Associates, my A1-C was extremely high, and taking all the insulin to control it seemed to make weight loss impossible. Having had a crippling accident in 1990, and several subsequent surgeries to my right knee and ankle over the years, trigger fingers in both hands along with arthritis, I lived with chronic pain, 7 days/week, 52 weeks/year for 26 years. I discovered I had IBS.
Close friends who are clients at this practice strongly suggested I be evaluated by Dr. Turnpaugh’s practice. November of 2016, I started a new chapter in my life. No gluten, no grains except occasional oatmeal, no dairy, as per the protocol for cleansing the body of toxins. Taking appropriate supplements and adhering to this diet brought immediate results. After two weeks, I could snap my fingers again ( something I couldn’t do for a few years), and the painful inflammation and swelling in my ankle vanished. My daily pain level of 17-18 out of 20 diminished to 2-3 and not daily. My endocrinologist had to reduce my daily intake of insulin significantly after 3 weeks and then again a few months later. I have lost 30 lbs. since November of 2016. My A1-C has dramatically dropped. I can play the piano again, and golf is pain-free, once again. My IBS disappeared after 2 weeks.
I am delighted with my new sense of health and wellness. I continue to eat oat grain ( occasionally ) and do not eat non-gluten breads or pastas. Fresh fruits and veggies, nut proteins, occasional eggs, meats seasoned with only veggies and salt and pepper, are my new life diet. I have dairy occasionally, and have found that it isn’t causing problems.
It takes courage and patience and some reordering priorities to make these changes to my lifestyle. Yes, I miss pizza… but it is a small price to pay for no pain, and better health. Thank you for the redirection to my life, and the constant support.

Oh goodness, I don’t know where to start…our experience has been so amazing with Dr. Herzog that I am not sure how to put it into words…

When we started with her, our son had so many health issues. We had switched between several different pediatricians as no one seemed to be able to figure out what was wrong…he was lethargic, bloated, had consistent digestive issues, and was mostly nonverbal. As parents, we just knew in our hearts that we were missing something and every time I would take him to the pediatrician they would just continue to prescribe more and more OTC medications. My LO wasn’t getting any better and our medicine chest just continued to grow; with some of the medications making his symptoms worse! Many a sleepless nights, I was up consistently searching the internet for an answer and couldn’t shake this nagging feeling that as a mother I was missing something for my sweet boy…

One day I finally asked myself, as a family why are we choosing to treat the symptoms and not the actual problem? Why can’t anyone answer what was wrong? How could I fix it? I came across a blog one tearful and sleepless night written by a mother who was in the same situation as I was, and she shared her journal and experiences with functional medicine. I reached out to Turnpaugh Health and Wellness Center and told them that I had no idea what I was doing, but I would like to make an appointment ASAP. Our first appointment was scheduled with Dr. Herzog, and I couldn’t have been more amazed and in awe with our experience. I had seen multiple doctors thus far, some good, some ok, and some that left a lot to be desired. Dr. Herzog was unbelievable, our first appointment was a huge success! She is extremely personable, she listened to all of my concerns and most of all she communicated without ever making me feel like I needed to be rushed out of the office!! I finally left feeling like all of my concerns have been heard and that for the first time in a long time, we were headed down the right path.

After we began a specific supplemental treatment based on our son’s bloodwork and genetic testing…our journey began!! She immediately was able to identify all of his concerns and started him on immediate treatment targeting his difficulties. Dr. Herzog was an angel sent from heaven…she walked us through every step of the way… she was always there to talk to us, answer questions, and reassure our family that we were on the right path!! The office staff was always available, pleasant, warm and welcoming to our family. We were able to see results quickly, my sweet baby boy who had previously wanted to go to bed from the minute he woke up was able to run, jump, and play with us! We were ecstatic… his body began showing the results, his appetite improved and his overall mood became so much more pleasant!!

The best decision we made was to begin exploring functional medicine and we are firm believers that everyone benefited. We found that all of the lifestyle changes we made for our son, we also incorporated as a family as well. Overall, I highly recommend Turnpaugh Health and Wellness Center as we are eternally grateful for their help and guidance with our healing.

Testimonial for Dr. Jessica Herzog, MD, FAAP, ABIHM
July 6, 2017
I am sharing my journey to wellness with you and want to thank Jessica for her role in making my journey and desire of health and wellness through natural healing with the aid of doTERRA. My choice in choosing Jessica came from several retreats and meetings which were given by doTERRA. I became a Wellness Advocate in 2013. Each time I listened to a holistic practitioner, my desire was to one day have my own holistic doctor and knew that the one I chose would also need to use doTERRA in their practice because I already used essential oils and doTERRA supplements and wanted to continue with these natural products.

When I went to Jessica, my list of complaints were lack of energy, brain fog, muscle aches and twitches, blurred vision and redness, arrhythmia, agitation and anxiety. Also have diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure.

Since Jessica has been treating me, my weight has decreased, energy has returned, brain fog has left (most of the time, I will be 70 in August), muscle aches, twitches, and blurred vision and redness are gone. Arrhythmia, agitation and anxiety decreased dramatically. AC1 count and cholesterol levels lowered and blood pressure is within normal range most of the time.

Other benefits are that I am able to easily bend and stretch with more mobility and range. Really notice this when exercising. I take Jazzercise at least three times a week. I see a massage therapist once a month, and she has noticed that my muscles are easier to release and work. So I get more out of exercise and my massage.
My desire at this time in my life journey here on earth is to enjoy each and everyday. I am grateful for the opportunity to be open to new experiences, spend time with family and friends and live in and appreciate Gods earthly views. I want to enjoy my down-hill ride to the ultimate heavenly rise. No extreme bumps or detours please.
Thank you Jessica for your devotion and work in healing naturally. I feel blessed to have you along for the ride. Carma

We always said Iris came into this world screaming and did not stop since. On June 14, 2011 Iris Elizabeth was born and she screamed that day for about 8 hours straight. Her temperament did not change for her first 4 years of life. Fortunately we cannot say this about her anymore. Thinking back to her infant days I am sad I did not know there was a better way to life sooner. Iris was very hard to console as a baby. We would blame it on her teething early getting her first tooth by 3 months. I used to stay up all hours of the night rocking her, walking around with her and nothing seemed to ease her pain. I remember crying to myself when rocking her out on the front porch one day wondering why my sweet baby is so miserable. After I stopped breast feeding her around 1 and a half the Dr insisted we start her on cows milk that it is good for her brain development. Iris was extremely addicted to milk, and cheese. She craved it like an addict and screamed for it uncontrollably if we tried to control her intake of it. I thought it was odd how she craved it so much, but since the Dr insisted I assumed it was healthy. We really could not take our daughter anywhere without her having a meltdown. Even at 4 years old she would still throw temper tantrums like she was 2. We thought it was our parenting; we tried everything to help her behavior. Every kind of reward system, which seemed to help for a little but always fell apart. Ever since she was a baby she would go days without having a bowel movement. I asked her Dr. if this was normal and that she seemed uncomfortable and his response was “everyone is different, she is fine.” From then on when the Dr. would ask me how her sleeping was and her behavior I would just say fine, afraid of my daughter being labeled or my parenting skills being questioned. Iris would get ear infections frequently and sick often during the winter. Sometimes she would just collapse when playing saying her legs hurt, sadly I just thought she was being dramatic at times and wanting attention. She did not get along well with other kids often losing her temper and biting them. My mom used to say she acted like a daycare kid, even though I barely worked and was home with her all the time. This really caused me to question myself, to feel guilty and confused of why my little girl can be this way. I would try to teach her basic preschool concepts at home, often with a short attention span and her getting very frustrated easily. I would worry about how well she will do in school, even considered sending her to a daycare thinking it just much be my approach to how I am trying to teach her.
Our world changed forever in the fall of 2015 when we started to think something was physically wrong with Iris. It all started with my mother who is an R.N. getting diagnosed with Lyme Disease . Her knee got very swollen and after a trip to the orthopedic the PCR test came back positive for lyme. She was dumbfounded and could not believe she had lyme since she is a nurse after all how could she not know? After doing research my mom thought I should look into getting tested since I was having various health issues the past few years. That is when we really fell down the rabbit hole of health and I started researching and thinking there is something physically wrong with all of us. I tested positive for lyme through Igenex Lab and immediately after that I found a LLMD for Iris in Maryland. Dr. Letita Short spent more time asking me questions and listening then any Dr ever did. Honestly I did not even know Drs spent that much time with any patient. It was quite the new experience. One of the first things she said was Iris needs to heal her GI system and that she has leaky gut syndrome. Tests confirmed she was sensitive to gluten and dairy. Iris also tested positive for mycoplasma pneumia and had a positive lyme reflex titer. Dr short put her on amoxicllian, as well as probiotics, fish oil, and vitamins. My husband and I were pretty clueless when it came to gluten free and hard a very hard time at first when it came to complety eliminating it from her diet. It was as if it was our first trip to the grocery store. After a few weeks of iris taking the antibiotic twice a day I saw my daughter go from bad to worse. She was completely lifeless most days, having trouble sleeping, showing no interest in playing. It was an extremely confusing time, not to mention family and friends not understanding thinking we are nuts for even thinking something is wrong with our daughter. At this point we refused to keep believing our Iris was an anxious miserable brat. We saw the glimpses of who she really is throughout her 4 years of life and we were holding on to those and pushing through. Around Christmas of that year Iris got even worse. She broke out in hives from the bactrim she was on and then the screaming started. Iris refused to even try to have a bowel movement. She literally screamed for two weeks straight we stopped her on the antibiotics and took her to Hershey E.R. They could see she was rather constipated and they started her on miralax. We called our lyme dr and she said it would be a good idea to get iris to a GI dr and get all the answers we can. Immediately we called Hershey to get her in to see a GI specialist. We informed her that Iris got diagnosed with leaky gut syndrome and is sensitive to gluten. Basically this dr told us not believe everything we read on the internet and iris would more then likely have to have a low dose of miralax a day for the rest of her life. We left that specialist feeling angry and confused, with the lyme specialist or the G.I. dr was lying to us about leaking gut. At this point all we could do was pray to God to show us the truth to help us find out what is wrong with our daughter. That night I did an online search for “leaky gut in Lancaster” and one of the first results was an article about the syndrome on Dr Turnpaugh Health and Wellness webpage. I called first thing in the morning and thank God someone cancelled that Monday so Iris got in right away. Dr. Herzog spent a significant amount of time asking questions and giving us some answers already to what is going on with Iris. She immediately told us to stop the gluten in all forms even cross contamination (which we were not aware of) and put Iris on supplements to combat the severe inflammation she was having, help her detox, and heal her gut. More blood work showed that her gut was not in good health, she was very deficient in key vitamins and minerals, and her body was fighting a few different viruses. Dr Herzog informed us there was hope and her behavior would get better. Within just a few weeks we saw improvement! The hardest part was figuring out which medicines to mix together with which juice and how to convince her to drink it. There were a lot of frustrating moments of trying to explain you need to take this medicine so you stop being sick! We had to have an adult conversation with our 4 year old about what is going on with her body to be able to convince to take the supplements a few times a day. After seeing Iris’s terrible blood work we were motivated to re-prioritize how we spend our finances. Now most of all our incomes go to organic, gluten free natural food and professional grade natural supplements. The food is not cheap and neither are the quality supplements but seeing our daughter happy, healthy and free of pain is priceless!
We did have a setback in in Iris’s treatment around Easter time. After two months of her new regimen she was doing great so happy and full of life, free of pain and fear. Then Easter came along with all of its sugary and artificial dye goodness. I thought I was doing a good job making sure she did not get any chocolate with milk in it or any candy with gluten. Her intake of sugar was rather high (everyone else was getting loaded with candy why not) and she also accidentally had a whole wheat pancake at my moms during this time. Iris suddenly spiraled out of control. She became extreme fearful and stopped going to her bible clubs because of separation anxiety. We learned the hard way about red 40 and all the other fake colors of the rainbow that are detrimental to anyone’s health. It took Iris a good two months to get back to where she was in her progress. Dr Herzog would do thorough testing of her bloodwork every few months and showed us side by side comparisons to her improvement. What I loved about the functional medicine approach was the Dr was not just guessing what was wrong we had the proof in writing. The boodwork was always explained in great detail why this level was low and how it affected other numbers. That was a great motivator to keep on pushing through even though when it seemed we took 2 steps forward 3 steps back at times. It was a learning experience along the way with a lot of bumps, it took about a year for us to get completely used to our new healthier lifestyle. We still get the funny looks and sarcastic comments from people about our diets, but we now know what is best for our daughter and our family. It is not worth it to just blend in with the misinformed crowd. Iris will be starting school this fall and I am confident that she is ready and so is she. This winter she barely got sick, and when she did it would be gone within 24 hours. While other children were missing weeks of church because of reoccurring sickness Iris has not missed one time this whole season. She soaks in learning like a sponge and sticks through playing board games now. She runs and plays without pain, and gets along well with others. Her creative side has been unleashed and she is always drawing or making up a craft just on her own. If someone offers her food she always asks if there is gluten, milk, or the bad colors in it. I do get some weird looks in the grocery store when we walk past gold fish crackers or the bread section and my children yell “bad food,” I am proud of that. I must admit at times I was sad and frustrated with our new way of life, but I have come to be accepting and very grateful that Iris can live her life to the fullest. Thank you Dr. Herzog for helping us find our daughter.

When I first came to Dr. Smith I had been dealing with autoimmune and thyroid conditions for years. I was getting overwhelmed with visits to family doctors and specialists. I would leave these visits with orders for the same blood work and no answers. Dr. Smith listened and we established a plan for my health. I no longer deal with the tiredness and other symptoms associated with my thyroid condition and I have also made progress in other areas of my health.
